RESUMO: A alimentação é um ato complexo e está relacionada a um processo social e cultural e, nesse sentido, cabe conhecer fatores relacionados à dieta vegetariana, cujo número de adeptos vêm aumentando. O presente estudo buscou compreender as representações sociais da alimentação para os vegetarianos, bem como os fatores que incidem na decisão de tornar-se e manter-se vegetariano, e, para tanto, foi utilizado um questionário composto por questões abertas e fechadas. A pesquisa contou com a participação online de 512 pessoas vegetarianas, com idades entre 16 e 66 anos. Sobre os motivos para adotar a dieta vegetariana, foram apontadas preocupações com o bem-estar animal em 89,26% das respostas, preocupações com o meio ambiente em 73,44%, e preocupações com a saúde em 46,87% das respostas. Quanto às dificuldades para se manter na dieta, 33,9% dos participantes responderam que a maior dificuldade se encontra em comer fora de casa, enquanto 31,4% apontaram não ter nenhuma dificuldade. Os dados sobre as representações sociais da alimentação foram analisados por Classificação Hierárquica Descendente (CHD), com o auxílio do software IRaMuTeQ. Os resultados apresentam-se em cinco classes lexicais, demonstrando que a alimentação para os vegetarianos vai além da própria comida. Alimentar-se é um ato político, revelando ser um compromisso social que visa amenizar o sofrimento causado aos animais pela indústria alimentícia. A alimentação, para os participantes, envolve comer de maneira saudável, minimizando a agressão ao meio ambiente, aos animais e a si mesmo, e aliar prazer às necessidades nutricionais, conscientes de que alimentar-se bem é ter qualidade de vida. ABSTRACT: Food is a complex act and is related to a social and cultural process, in this sense it is necessary to know factors related to the vegetarian diet, whose number of fans has been increasing. The present study sought to understand the social representations of food for vegetarians, as well as the factors that influence the decision to become and remain vegetarian, and for that purpose, a questionnaire composed of open-ended and closed-ended questions was used. The survey had the online participation of 512 vegetarian people, aged between 16 and 66 years. Regarding the reasons for adopting the vegetarian diet, there were concerns about animal welfare in 89.26% of the answers, concerns about the environment in 73.44%, and health concerns in 46.87% of the answers. As for the difficulties in keeping themselves on the diet, 33.9% of respondents answered that the greatest difficulty lies in eating out, while 31.4% said they had no difficulty. Data on the social representations of the diet were analyzed by descending hierarchical classification (DHC), with the aid of the IRaMuTeQ software. The results are presented in five lexical classes, demonstrating that food for vegetarians goes beyond food itself. Feeding oneself is a political act, revealing a social commitment that seeks to alleviate the suffering caused to animals by the food industry. The food for the participants involves eating in a healthy way, minimizing the aggression to the environment, animals and oneself, and alighting pleasure to nutritional needs, aware that eating well is having quality of life.
